EHow
The Buick Special, also called the Series 40, was produced from 1936 to 1958. The ’56 model had its grille changed and some other cosmetic adjustments, but the biggest change was a larger engine that increased power.

Powertrain
All of the 1956 Buick Specials had a V-8, Valve-in-head, 322 cubic engine that put out 220 horsepower. A two-barrel carburetor helped add to the power. A three-speed manual transmission was standard, with an automatic available.
